Adrenal Fatigue is a troublesome syndrome that affects millions. It occurs when your adrenal glands fail to produce the levels of cortisol your body needs to get you through ongoing, or chronic, stressful situations. It plays havoc with your body and your life. Insufficient cortisol has a profound impact on your organs, metabolism, cardiovascular system, fluid and electrolyte balance, and your heart. Even your sex drive can be compromised. Many of these changes occur on a cellular or biochemical level, as your system desperately tries to compensate for the low levels of cortisol.
Despite the slew of awful side effects, Adrenal Fatigue often goes undetected and a great many people experience it without ever realising what’s wrong. Correctly identifying the issue and tackling it head on is vital – and the sooner the better.
Here are four ways in which Adrenal Fatigue makes you feel bad, that will help you determine if you are experiencing the condition…
1. You’re Sleepy…
As the name suggests, one of the most common symptoms of Adrenal Fatigue is lethargy. No matter how early you hit the hay, or how late you set your alarm, you’re constantly pressing snooze.
Leaving it until the last possible second, you drag yourself out of bed, pour a super-sized, super-strong cup of coffee, and desperately try to wake up.
It doesn’t matter how much sleep you’ve had, you never wake feeling refreshed.
Ironically, a lack of sleep is a major cause of Adrenal Fatigue. Catching up on your sleep is a solid plan for recovery, but in the interim you will find yourself extremely tired, even after a great night’s sleep. You may also feel ‘foggy’, and have a general sense of being under the weather and gloomy.
2. You’re Listless…
In addition to the difficulty in getting going, you’ll experience an afternoon slump or ‘carb coma’. This is an unbeatable fatigue that knocks you out in the afternoon.
You find yourself craving coffee, or worse, sugar. Sugar cravings are a classic sign of adrenal fatigue. Be it coffee or Coca Cola, any high-energy, high-sugar, caffeine-infused beverage is your crutch throughout the day.
The problem is cortisol, or lack thereof. Your cortisol levels plummet making it impossible for you to maintain a reasonable energy level through the day.
No amount of caffeine or sugar will help. In fact, it will probably only make things worse.
3. You’re Wired…
By the end of the day you’re exhausted, but also wired. You’ve battled the fatigue all day, only to reach bedtime and suddenly find yourself wide awake.
You could go another three hours, easily.
Trying to sleep is pointless. The sandman eludes you, fickle taskmaster that he is, and you toss and turn until the wee small hours. Finally, you drift into a deep sleep…only to be woken by the alarm. And you’re back on the merry go round of exhaustion.
Once again, cortisol is the problem.
In the early stages of Adrenal Fatigue, high stress levels lead to high levels of cortisol, which causes late-night alertness. In the morning your blood sugar bottoms out. Your body realises it desperately needs fuel and forcibly wakes you up. Evening hits and suddenly you’re snacking, stimulated and utterly sleepless. In the later stages, your cortisol levels are low and you’re exhausted all day and all night.
4. You’re Restless…
Another common symptom is restlessness. When you finally drift off at night you struggle to stay asleep. Your eyes pop open at 3am, your mind is racing, you’re anxious, or you simply can’t switch off.
It’s little wonder you’re exhausted all day when this is what you’re dealing with at night!
Then, suddenly, ten minutes before your alarm is due to go off, you’re dead to the world…
If that all sounds a little too familiar, here are some quick tips on how to beat adrenal fatigue…
